Pest Control - Get your Grain Stores and Farm Buildings Rodent-Proof
As the cold and damp winter weather starts to draw in, rodents will be looking for somewhere nice and warm with a plentiful food supply – and there’s nowhere more ideal than a farm building or grain store.
A study out earlier this year, by Farmers Guardian and BASF Pest Control Solutions, found that farms across the UK are continuing to suffer from serious rat and mice problems, despite greater rodenticide use and improved baiting practice, with the winter months seeing the greatest rodenticide use as rats and mice hole up for the colder months.
All Graham Heath Construction, steel-framed farm buildings and grain stores are built to be rodent-proof, using the latest materials and flashing techniques. If you have an older, timber-framed building you should double-check its condition every year to make sure you keep unwanted visitors out to protect your harvest.
Tips to help prevent a rodent infestation this winter include:
- Make sure that any grain or food spills are cleaned up immediately
Store grain and animal feeds in bins and storage containers and don’t leave any old sacks lying around
- Keep stores as tidy as you can, rodents like plenty of hiding places so don’t give them any if you can help it
- Check for any holes within the walls of your buildings and storage sheds – no matter how small – and seal these up
- Don’t forget about underneath doors – rodents can squeeze through the smallest of gaps. Bristle strips are useful to help prevent entry BASF has a website dedicated to rural pest control, with useful tips and videos.
